Story
I started riding my bike when I was 13 - I rode to school, to visit friends, on adventures and 1 year we even had a teacher that organised a weekly bike rally (searching for clues) as a school sport. I’ve continued to ride my bike to varying degrees over the years. I now ride to work, ride with friends, go on adventures and even race occasionally. I’ve also become a strong supporter of the Amy Gillett Foundation and help spread the message of sharing the road and a metre matters. This is important to me as Cathy rides, most of my family rides, my neighbours ride, the kids in our street ride – actually most people ride a bike for some part of their life (if not the majority of their life). In November I’ll be riding, with a bunch of likeminded individuals, from Coolangatta to Sydney. It’ll be a lot of fun (and challenging) with the added bonus of increasing awareness for safe cycling and raising money for the AGF. My aim is to raise more than $7,500. I’ll put in most of the money, but anything you can give will be appreciated.
Amy Gillett Foundation
The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
